Healthy Contra Costa

A group of diverse people holding signs demanding justice

Can you imagine how policy would change for health, economic development and education if low-income BIPOC communities had a seat at the table as decision-makers? Healthy Contra Costa envisions a transformed community where our neighbors advance the demand for economic justice, education reform and systems change that centers the residents of the community to advance healing and the elimination of anti-Black racism across Contra Costa County.

HCC works through action teams which are collective tables of community partners, residents, parents, young people, and systems partners working together to create lasting policy change. Projects include:

  • The North Richmond Quality of Life Plan, developed by a Resident Leadership Team, focused on Youth/Education, Housing, Business Opportunity, and Community Safety.
  • A health equity strategy across the four health provider systems serving West Contra Costa being developed by a team of Community Health Advocates.
  • Engaging with the West Contra Costa Unified School District on a more effective community engagement strategy that supports parents and youth in the decision-making process of the LCAP process. This work is led by the Schools and Neighborhoods Action Team.

Through HCC’s work in Resident Power Building and Policy Advocacy work they have achieved countywide impact and have greatly influenced:

  • The City of Richmond’s Race Equity Plan
  • Contra Costa Health Services Health Equity Roadmap
  • The launch of the County Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice
  • Building parent and student power to continue to influence the WCCUSD’s strategic plan and Community Schools grant.

To achieve success in this work, HCC partners with some pretty influential community members: ACCE, Faith in the Bay, Lifelong Medical, UC Berkeley-Y-Plan, Safe Return Project, Building Blocks for Kids, CHDC, Urban Habitat, UCB Haas Institute, YES – Nature to Neighborhoods, Rubicon, OneContraCosta Coalition, The California Endowment, Richmond Pulse, RYSE Center, Richmond Main Street, Resident Leaders, Kids First Richmond, Social Policy Research Associates, Systems leaders at City, County and Regional levels.
